Fluorite has been mined commercially in southeastern Illinois since the early 19th century in a deposit that came to be called the Illinois-Kentucky Fluorspar Mining District which spans southeastern Illinois and parts of northwestern Kentucky. The earliest reported mining in the area was in 1835 for lead at the Columbia Mine in Crittenden County.
